This fall, Tapiola will resound with Beethoven’s symphonies known by their nicknames: Eroica, Fate, and Pastoral. From contemporary composers, the program features music by Teosto Award winner Joel Järventausta, Unsuk Chin, and Anders Hillborg. The fall season brings to Espoo, among others, the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s principal harpist Emmanuel Ceysson, the soprano Samuel Mariño, whose voice moves audiences to tears, and Carolin Widmann, known for her unique violin artistry. The Tapiola Sinfonietta and Antti Holma’s “The Most Terrible Christmas Songs” concert, which concludes the fall season, is a tribute to the dark side of Christmas.
The cimbalom, the pipa, and the mridangam are instruments you don’t hear every day in a concert hall, but they will all be featured in the Tapiola Sinfonietta’s spring season. The guest artists for the spring season include young Ukrainian conductor Olha Dondyk, making her debut in Tapiola; Fabio Biondi, a renowned specialist in early music; and Inmo Yang, who won the hearts of Finnish audiences with his victory in the Sibelius Violin Competition.
In his spring concerts, the orchestra’s artistic partner Nicolas Altstaedt treats the audience to Central European musical delights, ranging from Honegger’s rarely heard Fourth Symphony to Dvořák’s ever-captivating Seventh Symphony. The mini-opera "Once Again" by composer Heta Aho and librettist Juha Itkonen, which garnered acclaim at its premiere, is part of Musica nova Helsinki’s program. The spring season culminates in a joint performance with Sinfonia Lahti of Igor Stravinsky’s "The Rite of Spring", conducted by Andrew Manze.
Next season, our festivals will focus on two significant themes. At the Queer Festival this fall, we will give a voice to composers who were unable to live the lives they wanted, as well as to those who served as pioneers of the queer movement. At the festival’s closing concert, "Symposium!", we will hear the world premiere of a new work by composer Jasper Dommett. At the spring Roots Festival, we will explore the movement of people and cultures, as well as their encounters across history and geography. The world premiere piece for the Roots Festival will be by Eero Hämeenniemi.
Espoo is Finland’s capital for children and young people, and this is reflected in the Tapiola Sinfonietta’s strong commitment to original productions of children’s music. These include, among others, the Mr. Clutterbuck children’s concert produced in collaboration with Mauri Kunnas. The new audience engagement residency with Hassan Maikal is a unique initiative in our field. In this two-year artist collaboration, we meet young people in their own spaces and make music together.
The Tapiola Sinfonietta will be playing for you also in the coming season.
