Back to Nature?

Conductor Kristian Sallinen has designed a program in which Beethoven’s and Chin’s works intertwine to create a vision where urbanization clears a path through nature, leaving behind a dream of a balanced relationship with the natural world.

Kristian Sallinen conductor

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, “Pastoral”
Unsuk Chin: Graffiti

Please note that there will be no intermission.

“No one can love the countryside as much as I do. I love a tree more than a man”, claimed Beethoven, who spent most of his life in the city. The Pastoral Symphony was completed in 1808 during summer hiking trips in the spa resort of Heiligenstadt and the suburban area of Nussdorf. Unsuk Chin’s Graffiti (2012) is inspired by urban street art, combining a masterful finish with earthy rawness. Chin’s music also juxtaposes the feverish activity of city days with the desolation and mystery of the night. Conductor Kristian Sallinen is advancing his international career. He has designed a program in which Beethoven’s and Chin’s works intertwine to create a vision where urbanization clears a path through nature, leaving behind a dream of a balanced relationship with the natural world.
