You are the director of the Indie concert series for the 2025–2026 season. What path did you take from musician to director?

I have always experienced music as something very visual. For me, music is about telling stories and conveying moods. My interest in directing arose from a need to expand my means of expression.

What has been a concert experience for you that has felt like it has renewed the performance of art music?

There is a lot of interesting stuff happening in the free field, and it is understandable that agile operators find it easier to challenge conventions than institutions. That is why Tapiola Sinfonietta is showing its courage in the form of the Indie series.

How easy has it been to get the orchestra musicians on board with your vision for the production?

The musicians of Tapiola Sinfonietta have been admirably open to everything that visual designer Joonas Tikkanen and I have proposed. They have a deep understanding of the added value that visuals and small dramatic elements bring to music and the audience experience.

What do you hope an indie concert will offer its audience that differs from a conventional concert experience?

Joonas Tikkanen's stunning visual creations are sure to send shivers down your spine! It has been extremely fascinating to discuss visual expression with Joonas, deepening the moods and characters of the music.

The first concert, Dream or Trauma, explores rituals of letting go. What kinds of rituals of letting go have you personally practiced?

I live a very busy life with two small children and interesting and varied work. I try to let go of unnecessary thoughts while gazing out at the open sea.

If you had complete freedom to plan the after-party for the concert, what would it be like?

Dance party to the beat of Brahms' piano quintet!
