Artistic Partners

Tapiola Sinfonietta is responsible for its own program planning. The artistic management team consists of the artistic director and two musician members. Tapiola Sinfonietta is characterized by long-term collaboration with its chosen artistic partners. These partners include conductors and soloists. In addition, the orchestra selects a resident artist for each season.

Nicolas Altstaedt

It is with tremendous joy I am looking forward to the partnership with the Tapiola Sinfonietta. The orchestra has always been a role model for me since our first encounter and I can’t wait to dive into more moments of inspirational music making together.

Ryan Bancroft

Bancroft's career has been on a steep upward trajectory. He rose to international prominence in 2018 after winning first prize and the audience prize at the Malko Competition for young conductors. In late November 2021, he received the Royal Philharmonic Society's Conductor of the Year award. In 2023, he will take up the position of chief conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

Marzi Nyman

I have a deep passion for chamber and orchestral music. When the Sinfonietta musicians asked me to be their partner, I had to pinch myself. My feelings had been reciprocated! This partnership is definitely one of the most important honors I have received. The connection with the musicians is extremely important to me, and my dream is that the dialogue between us will deepen and that our concerts will feature a real “band,” of which I have the privilege of being a member. My feeling is this: “The playground is open, welcome!

Our Past Artistic Partners

Irina Zahharenkova

Irina Zahharenkova (b. 1976) is Tapiola Sinfonietta’s artist in residence for the 2024/25 season. Zahharenkova, who lives in Finland, was born in Estonia and has since established herself in the international music world. She has won several prizes at prestigious international piano competitions, including the Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig (2006), the Alessandro Casagrande Competition in Italy (2006), and the George Enescu Competition in Bucharest (2005). She was also a prize winner at the Artur Rubinstein Piano Competition in Tel Aviv (2008) and won the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship in 2007.

Zahharenkova earned her Master of Music degree from the Tallinn Conservatory of Music under Professor Lilian Semper. She later continued her studies at the Sibelius Academy in Finland under Professor Hui-Ying Líu-Tawaststjerna. She has also deepened her expertise in early music instruments such as the harpsichord and fortepiano.

Zahharenkova has performed extensively throughout Europe and Asia. Her solo concerts have been heard at many prestigious festivals, such as the Klavier-Festival Ruhr and Mendelssohn Festival in Germany, the Spoleto Festival in Italy, the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and Naantali Music Festival in Finland, and the Prades Pablo Casals Festival in France. Her concerts have also included performances at such notable concert halls as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Konzerthaus in Berlin. Zahharenkova has also performed as a soloist with many leading orchestras, including the BBC Ulster Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Her collaborations with conductors such as Olari Elts, Robert Trevino, and Leif Segerstam have earned her widespread acclaim.

Jean-Jacques Kantorow

French conductor and violinist Jean-Jacques Kantorow was appointed honorary conductor of the Tapiola Sinfonietta in 2011. He served as the orchestra's artistic director from 1993 to 1999 and as its permanent conductor from 2000 to 2006. Kantorow's tenure was crucial in shaping the Tapiola Sinfonietta's distinctive string sound. The orchestra has also made a considerable number of recordings with him: a third of its total of around 70 recordings have been made with Kantorow. In addition to his work as a conductor, Kantorow has had a successful career as a concert violinist.

Since 2001, Tapiola Sinfonietta has worked closely with selected artistic partners and artists in residence.
