AFTERNOON CONCERT: ARCTIC SOUNDS
Anna-Maria Helsing, conductor
Jukka Rantamäki, host
Einojuhani Rautavaara: Cantus Arcticus, concerto for birds and orchestra
Dimitri Shostakovich: Chamber Symphony op. 73a
Rautavaara’s Cantus Arcticus fills Tapiola Hall with birdsong. Written in 1972, it has become one of the best-known and most frequently performed works of Finnish classical music. The Arctic mood is complemented by Shostakovich’s rugged and powerful Chamber Symphony.
